Who is the PMUA and what do we do?

• The PMUA maintains and operates all sanitary sewer service lines sewage pumping stations and provides for proper collection and treatment of municipal waste water in addition to providing direct services such as the collection of garbage, recyclables and bulky waste. Acting as a regulatory agency, PMUA is responsible for the City’s entire waste flow.  This includes the administering, monitoring, inspecting and enforcing of all federal, state, and county rules and regulations regarding the environment and waste management.

• Residential and commercial services include the collection of solid waste and garbage, as well as the collection and disposal of recyclable items such as co-mingled and paper.

• The PMUA also operates the newly renovated City of Plainfield Environmental Resource Center. Maintaining this facility on Rock Avenue, the PMUA oversees the City’s solid waste drop-off site for residential and commercial use to dispose of recyclables, bulky and vegetative waste.

• Public Can Service: Responsible for the collection & disposal of solid waste from containers placed in municipal buildings, downtown business district, parks and other designated areas in Plainfield, PMUA works to keep the City environmentally healthy and clean.

• PMUA disposes of vegetative waste and debris collected by the Plainfield Department of Public Works.  This includes sweepings, leaves, grass, branches and heavy woods.

• Abatement Services:  PMUA cleans up vacant lots and other City properties that pose a health hazard or are in violation of health codes.

• Community Services:

The PMUA focuses on the well-being of the community and is involved in many programs which enhance the quality of life for our residents.  

• Clean Communities Program- PMUA employees with the help of volunteers of all ages teamed up to collect approximately 6000 pounds of trash from public areas to help keep Plainfield a “Clean Community”.
• Mayor’s 100 Day Clean Initiative- The PMUA worked with the Mayor to improve the City’s appearance.  Being part of this quality of life team the PMUA joined forces with several departments throughout the city taking street sweeping to the next level.  Through its joint “Sweep-
  A-Ward Campaign the PMUA hauled some 176,000 lbs. of litter & debris collected from residential districts.
• Unify to Beautify Campaign- PMUA employees took part in a clean-up of a cemetery in Plainfield along with several volunteers from city organizations.
• Environmental Fair- PMUA hosts an event which provides information,  education, food, music, rides and children’s activities free of charge to the community.
