Garbage Disposal

  • Food, food scraps and other non-recyclable waste
  • Styrofoam
  • Plastic utensils
  • Grease, oils and cooking fats (secured in a container with a lid before discarding)
  • Rags, sponges and old cloths
  • Candy wrappers
  • Food-soiled items such as:
    • Paper plates
    • Tissue, napkins, paper towels
    • Plastic wrap
    • Aluminum foil
Follow theses steps to prepare your garbage for disposal:
  • Secure your garbage in plastic trash bags (no loose garbage in the container).
  • All garbage must fit in the cart with the lid completely closed (no excess bags outside the container).
  • Never put recyclables in your garbage container.
  • Never put garbage or plastic bags in your recycle container.

Preparing your recyclables for dual-stream disposal:

Don’t mix co-mingled plastic, glass & aluminum recyclables with paper and cardboard material

Co-Mingled Materials

  • Remove all caps and rinse the containers.
  • Materials must fit loosely in the recycling container with the lid completely closed.

Paper & Cardboard

  • Paper & cardboard must be clear of any food scraps before disposal.
  • All acceptable paper & cardboard must must be flattened and contained in a small blue bin, or bundled and tied with twine or rope, then set at the curb.

Remember… Recyclables must be separated from regular garbage:

  • Never put recyclables in your garbage container.
  • Never put garbage in your recycle container.

Practice these 3 R’s everyday to help reduce waste, protect the environment and conserve resources:

REDUCE

  • Reduce the amount of unnecessary packaging when purchasing products.
  • Adopt practices that reduce waste.

REUSE

  • Consider reusable products.
  • Maintain and repair durable products.
  • Reuse bags, containers and other items.
  • Borrow, rent, or share items used infrequently.
  • Sell or donate goods instead of throwing them out.

RECYCLE

  • Choose recyclable products and containers and recycle them.
  • Select products made from recycled materials.
  • Compost yard trimmings and some food scraps.

Recycling is mandated by Federal and State Laws - Violators are subject to fines. Residents are required to separate trash and recycle certain materials.

Other Waste

The following materials should not be discarded with your regular garbage or recyclables. Check below and use the “What Goes Where” tool to find out how to properly dispose of these types of waste.


Electronic Waste (E-Waste) should NOT be discarded with your recycling OR regular garbage.
Plainfield residents or property owners (only) may bring E-waste items to the PERC/Transfer Station for disposal free of charge.

DROP-OFF GUIDELINES

  • Maximum 2 electronic items per day, per person allowed for drop-off.
  • PMUA reserves the right to limit E-Waste drop-off once capacity is reached.

Commercial customers are not allowed to dispose of E-Waste at the transfer station. If you are not a Plainfield property owner or resident, or you have E-Waste that is not accepted at our facility, check the Union County recycling page or use the Recycle Coach app to find other disposal locations and events.

The following items are considered bulk waste and should not be discarded with your recycling OR regular trash.
  • Furniture
  • Tires
  • Beds & mattresses
  • Kitchen appliances
  • Air conditioners
  • Strollers
  • Laundry baskets
  • Vacuum cleaners
  • Lawn mowers
  • Hardcover books, etc

Bulky waste is collected by appointment only (scheduled by the property owner) on a first come first serve basis. For more info about our bulk waste disposal services, click here.

Hazardous Waste may NOT be disposed of in either your recycle OR garbage container(s). Here are examples of Hazardous Waste that should NOT be discarded with recycling or trash:
  • Aerosol cans
  • Wet and/or latex paint
  • Fluorescent bulbs (compact & standard)
  • Syringes
  • School lab waste
  • Household special waste
  • Used motor oil & spent filters
  • Smoke Detectors
  • Propane tanks
  • Medication
  • Helium tanks

Vegetative Waste Collection
PMUA does not collect vegetative waste; the City of Plainfield Department of Public Works (DPW) is responsible for the collection of leaves, branches, etc. For a schedule and more information, contact the local Plainfield DPW at (908) 753-3427 or check online.
Vegetative Waste Drop-off at PERC
Vegetative waste is accepted at the PERC/Transfer Station. Seasonal leaf drop-off is also offered at no-charge to Plainfield residents. Contact PMUA for complete guidelines and information.
