That old pizza box you placed in your recycling cart is made of cardboard and it might even have a recycling logo on it, but that doesn’t mean it belongs in the cart. Pizza boxes with food and grease lose their recycling qualities and cannot be recycled.
Contaminants like grease and glue will actually disrupt the processes needed to extract raw materials and ruin an entire batch of recycling. It’s sad, but often this results in workers tossing entire loads of recycling into the trash when they find one single contaminated item in order not to contaminate the larger batch of recyclables.
Common list of recyclables that need to be clean for recycling:
- Plastic cups/plates
- Cardboard
- Paper cups/plates
