New Blue Recycle Cans Around Plainfield

As you walk around the Plainfield commercial zones, take notice of the new blue recycle containers that have been placed next to the black street cans. Park Avenue, Front Street, East 2nd Street, North Avenue and South Avenue have been the first City streets to receive these cans designated for the disposal of co-mingled cans and bottles.

The PMUA is working hard to influence good recycling habits among its residents. By placing blue recycle cans in public areas, we hope to capture more recycling coming from trash generatedby patrons of the City’s various business establishments. When purchasing a bottle of water, juice or soda remember to dispose of the empty container in the blue can designated for recyclables. The Authority thanks you in advance of being mindful and recycling.

Recycling Helps Offset Disposal Tonnage and Costs.

Our goal is to reduce excess expenditures on waste disposal, and offset operation costs by encouraging all residences to consistently follow the proper guidelines for recycling, to help widen the revenue stream and decrease waste tonnage.

Be mindful when separating your trash. You now can recycle food containers along with your cans and bottles. Please see home page for pictures and examples of the food containers that should now be recycled. Continue to separate your cardboard and paper as well for recycling.

How Can we Reduce our Environmental Footprint?

By minimizing what each of us sends to the landfill, we can make significant strides towards reducing our environmental footprint. Did you ever really think about where an item such as paper comes from? One must understand that paper is a resource that comes from our earth, and that resources will eventually run out. This point alone is motivation for people to practice good recycling habits.

Simple tasks for example, such as putting an extra container or bag next to your trash basket, can be helpful when separating recyclables from regular trash. You will be amazed at the decrease of waste in your garbage bin once you are committed to separating your recyclables. Less trash in your container means you are sending less garbage to the landfill. At the same time you are increasing the material you will be recycling. Adding this extra bin next to your container will go a long way in saving our environment.

Other examples include going paperless on bills and financial statements, reusing food serving and take out containers, avoid buying individually packaged food and donating items such as clothing, toys, furniture and books that you no longer use. Buy only what is recyclable and reusable. Refrain from using paper plates and cups and pack your lunch in a lunch box or cooler. Also, most stores take back and recycle plastic bags used to carry groceries. Remember to bring your old plastic bags back to the store. Several dry cleaners take hangers back as well.

All it takes is a few simple steps. Implementing these tips into your daily routine will drastically reduce your environmental footprint. Do your part to make the world a greener place.
