Save Money & the Environment - Recycle!
PMUA would like to remind residents that all citizens are required by NJ State Law to recycle certain materials.
Everywhere we go- work, a sporting event, school and even in our own homes, one must remember the requirement to separate aluminum cans, glass, plastics, paper/cardboard and electronics from our regular garbage. Each individual is responsible for recycling.
Why is separation of materials (recycling) so important?
First and foremost recycling is good for the environment because it allows us to transform our old products into new useful commodities letting us save resources and send less trash to landfills while reducing air and water pollution.
More reasons to recycle old products include:
- Saves Money: When you recycle old products and have less dependency on new products, you will end up saving some money. That money can then be used for many other purposes, and the money saved, can have a huge impact on your monthly expenditure.
- Generates Revenue: When disposing recyclables, PMUA receives payment from the recycle center for clean, uncontaminated recyclable loads. This assists in our cost containment strategy to maintain customer disposal rates. For this reason, it is crucial for residents to separate all recyclables from their regular garbage to ensure recyclables are not contaminated with solid waste leading to rejected loads when brought to the recycle center.
- Reduce Pollution: To save energy and reduce harmful gasses in the environment, the more you recycle old products the less you will require the need to buy new products. Because product demand will be less, the air we breathe will be cleaner as a result.
- Reduction in Landfills: By reducing our daily waste, the size of the landfills can be significantly reduced having a positive effect on wildlife and our environment.
- Conservation of Materials: All new products are made from raw materials which are taken from earth’s natural resources. For example, we need wood to make paper. This means cutting trees down to make paper products. We can reduce the amount of trees needed to be cut by recycling more paper and relying less on new merchandise.
- Preventing Climate Change: Conservation of energy is the main factor in the fight against climate change. When the demand is less for new products, fewer products will be produced leading to energy savings.
